Hey guys, I was wondering whats the better material between SR-101 and D2 for general outdoors use? I will ned a carry along knife for Canoeing, Camping and Hiking. It will be used for various chores you would encounter during these activities. What material stays sharper, doesn't rust as fast, and is easier to sharpen?? Thanks

I'll throw in my 2 cents

D2 is much more rust resistant than SR101. But if you have a coated SR101 blade like most rats are then it won't be much of an issue. Just keep the edge dry and you'll be all good.

D2 is generally more brittle than other blade steels. That being said, Swamp Rat has shown that their heat treat process has greatly improved D2's toughness. Maybe someone can post the link to the testing they did.

Remember that the knives that come in D2 tend to have blades of 5" smaller. The SR101 knives are bigger.....much bigger in some cases and so you'll use them for different things. A small D2 blade will catch more food prep and whittling jobs while the rat daddy will be called upon to clear a grove of trees. :D

Do you want a do everything blade? if so than a big SR101 is the way to go in my opinion. A camp tramp or Ratweiler.

Savageman,
Good question. The best explanation I've read was by Jerry and Jennifer Busse. It can be seen here www.swampshack.com and look under the heading "Steel FAQ's" at the top of the page.

It gives some pretty detailed reasons why we use SR101 and why we also used D2 for a while

I hope that helps

:D:D
