On a happier note , I see the Tanto AD-10 Lite , AUS10 on sale for under $40 .

Actually, early on they were made in Taiwan. I bought 1 shortly after they were available to buy, (pre-GSM of course) and the blade says 8Cr13MoV Taiwan.

I think it was around a year ago, give or take, that it changed to 8Cr14MoV. I don't have one of these, so I don't know what it says on the blade. Maybe someone here has 1 or maybe there's a pic of one here on BF.

I never paid any real attention to where made due to the Chinese made steel. good info though......

I did just now find some images / pics showing Taiwan on the blade . Don't knowif this is current issue .

But why not just say so ?

cold steel under Lynn had some Chinese made knives. the bush ranger lite was made in China and the luzon as some examples......

it's not a brand new thing......newest thing I noticed is the machetes. change in steel and location made.

The 12" Bowie Machete was made in China and South Africa. If I remember correctly, they were made in China at first, they had a Kraton handle (well a thin layer of Kraton); then when they were made in South Africa... no more Kraton, just the hard polypropylene handle.

The 18" Bowie Machete was also made in China, and I believe they were also made in South Africa later on, though I'm not certain about that.

There were other CS blades made in China in the Thompson era (though I don't recall which) but most were made in Japan, Taiwan, South Africa and India as far as I recall...

Anyone interested can check the old CS catalogs of course...

Glad to know this ! Thanks . :)
No worries!

I also got the Tanto version maybe a year and a half or so back.. also 8Cr14MoV, made in Taiwan. I remember being a bit thrown off by the steel back then. I'm not super familiar with Cold Steel's entire line-up, but I do know that the "budget" Tawain knives are typically AUS 10A, or .4116 on the lower (less-expensive) end. It does seem a bit odd, the Taiwan-made knives using an 8Cr steel. The SR1 Lite blade is a solid chunk of steel though. I'm thinking maybe the 8Cr was a business compromise.. cut costs a little bit versus using AUS 10A, without bringing it all the way down to .4116.. Idk.. just a guess.. again, for the price, I really can't complain haha..

I would LOVE to see the SR1 Lite made with a thick slab of AUS10. I've had very good luck with my Mini Recon staying sharp far longer than I thought it would.
