SRG Grinder?

It's been discussed before. General consensus is that it doesn't appear to be very sturdy. Heavy is good in a grinder

See below, I was mistaken. .

I've searched using every search term I can think of and haven't seen a negative comment...

Sweet jesus...... it weighs 61lbs. Trust me its incredibly well built, tracks better than anything I've used besides a tw90 and kyle is a stand up guy

Compensate much? Got a huge lifted truck to drive a few miles to work? My kmg weighed almost double, and yet bearings were bad, no surfaces were flat or square, rusted like crazy and tension setup was terrible.

His tension setup is ingenious, believe it or not some designs are ahead of the curve. I've gotten to test two generations of his grinder, and know of 7 other makers who love theirs.

But by all means say things about it when you have never used it....

To date I've owned or used a kmg, a tw90, a pheer, an esteem, bader 2 and 3, burr king, Coote, grizzly, and ameribrade. I'd out the design and build quality over all but the tw but that's 7-8 times the price and the customer service better than any except maybe ameribrade they are amazing with customer service too.

Personal attacks aside. I stand corrected. I thought that was a different grinder. And mine weighs 120 pounds if that excites you bro.

I have the SRG 1.5 and it's been great so far. I've never used anything else, but it tracks well, belt changes are effortless, everything is solid and the wheels are beautiful. Kyle is also a great guy and provides good customer service, I doubt you can do much better in that price range.

I don't know anything about the grinder other than the pictures I've seen, but it seems like it'd be a decent machine, looks well machined, and well priced to boot.

That's a fine looking machine

Looks like an incredible price! The work rest/tool arm isn't my preference but the rest is pretty good it seems. I love how the motor would actually mount to the frame though

What motor and control did you add to your srg

Since this topic got resurrected... I thought I'd mention that Kyle had put up a video of it a couple weeks ago on youtube. I have no affiliation and have never used it.

Maybe that would help someone that was interested.

I recently acquired the 1.5x0.75 tooling arm version of this grinder. I have a 1HP motor and VFD on it. It's been a step-change for me... I was on a 2x48 Dyaton before. I've only been messing around with it for 2 months now but have been very happy with it so far.

Some notes I have so far:

  • I have his "old style" platen. The platen was not running 100% parallel with the belts, so I meticulously sanded a washer as a shim until they were parallel.
  • I could be doing something wrong, but I find the belt tracking adjustment to be very hard to turn when bringing the belt to the left (screwing it in). Sometimes I disengage the belt tension to track the belt over a few right hand turns... I haven't messed with it at all, so maybe it just needs oil. And the tracking knob is fairly close to the running belt so I've nicked myself a few times trying to get it tracked to the left.

These are small things that in my opinion can be modified by a imaginative knife maker.

This is mine @ 5:44 (I have some panning angles of it running at the end):

I eventually want to do a full review on it, but haven't had enough time behind it yet.

Can you advise motor and controller you chose?
