Hi folks, is the new SRK in AUS-8 as good as the older in carbon 5 ?

Thanks in advance !

A quick search through the forums brought me to this thread over here. It might be helpful to you.

AUS-8 steel is kinda like 440 stainless with less chromium and some vanadium. The carbon content is comparable to 440 (less than .76) but I think it has a slightly higher average.

I don't think it's likely to be as good as carbon V (which I believe to be comparable to 1095), but it'll be more chemical resistant than carbon V and it'll probably be good enough for most responsible uses.

Aus-8 can take a wicked edge easier than many of the fancier steels , that's one advantage, especially if one is new to the world of sharpening , and hold that edge...... until it's begins to dull. :D

Define "good".

Carbon 5 would be tougher

AUS8 is stainless.

Not sure which would hold an edge better.

AUS8 is one of the easier stainless steels to sharpen. It is probably about the same effort to sharpen AUS8 as to sharpen Carbon V.

oops double post.
Must be holloween goblins.

I have both steels and had Carbon V for many years.

I would say AUS 8 is easier to sharpen but not so much that you would scream and shout. Carbon V will hold an edge a little longer but again not so much you would freak.

As far as toughness is concerned, I know from experience that CV is way tough. I haven't pushed my AUS8 knives that hard yet. I would like to see Noss to do that on his knifetests.com website.

Carbon V will hold an edge for much longer than AUS 8-A.

I tend to think that they will be very similar when it comes to toughness...
