Hi, in the Cold Steel Christmas Sale they are offering two of their Carbon-V knives for a good deal. The SRK for $59.99 and the Recon Tanto for $49.99. I've heard fantastic things about the carbon-v steel, and I was wondering which of these you guys think is better for a outdoors, all purpose knife.

I agree that the spear point or bowie type of blade is more useful, but the Recon Tanto has a better price.
Maybe just save your money and get a Fallkniven, Bark River, Benchmade, etc.?

Are you sure they are the Carbon V versions? Cold Steel's website says they are now AUS8. I have a Carbon V Recon Tanto that I love.

The Recon Tanto and the SRK in Cold Steel's Christmas sale flyer are both "seconds" and are both made of Carbon V steel it says. I have both and I like both, but the SRK is a better all around knife I think. The Recon Tanto has a point design with slightly more weight toward the point, and it has a blade that's one inch longer, so it is a little more "blade heavy" and will chop a little better. The Recon Tanto also has a slight curve to it's entire edge, making it a pretty good slicer. This year the SRK is priced at $10 more than the Recon Tanto, and I'll bet that's because the SRK is a more popular knife. That in itself tells you something. Don't wait to order, though, because CS often sells out of what they have on sale quickly. Be sure to notice that Bushman seconds are on sale @ 3 for $30, too.

Yeah, it's factory seconds of the old carbon-v type. I'm not too keen on any stainless steel, so I've been looking at carbon-V sk-5 and cold steel's regular 1055. I can look after high-carbon steel well enough, so it shouldn't be a problem. Are there any really high quality types of stainless out there? Also, what other brands out there offer good, inexpensive knives?

+1 on the SRK. More useful blade shape overall, but if I were you I'd go with whichever model I prefer and enjoy it. It'll be in your hands, not ours. I don't think you can lose either way.

Would also like the info on the Christmas sale if someone could kindly post.

Thanks, m4auto
