Greetings,I am a new member so if this has been asked before please forgive me.

Would you choose a Cold Steel SRK or SOG'S Seal Pup(standard 440,not Elite)

I am looking for a new knife mainly for hunting and general camp tasks as well as survival and these two fit in my price range. Can anyone give some constructive advice...much appreciated....Rodion

Hello, ive had an srk for many years, ive been a big fan of carbon v steel as well. i would rather have that steel than aus-8.they are both good knives.i even bought an srk to send to a soldier in iraq through smoky mountian knife works.the seal pup may have a bit of a finer edge for more delicate work, but i still like the srk better.also, im disappointed that sog is now making knives in tawain, to cut costs, & now using aus 6 in the desert dagger ,tigershark,& others to cut costs as well.if you need a real tough knife for abuse, the srk is great.......

First things first: Welcome to BF!

Between the two, I think the SRK would be the better choice. Easy to sharpen, good edge holding, secure grip and pretty tough. Good choice all around.

I really like the SOG Seal Pup, feels good in the hand, takes and holds a good edge and cuts really well. Never handled an SRK but a friend used one in Iraq last year and liked it.

goldie, The Desert Dagger, TigerShark and the other AUS-6 SOGs were ALWAYS AUS-6. Recently though SOG upgraded the steel on the Dagger and the Seal Pup to AUS-8, along with the Government Agent. New models are called Daggert, GOV-Tac and SEAL Pup Elite. SOG has won more awards over the years then any other American knife company, not just because of looks but do to overall design, concept and useability. Sure, they don't use the latest and greatest steels all the time, but what they do use works great.

Yeah SOG is out soursing two or three knives to Tawain, so is BUCK, CRKT, Benchmade, even SpyderCo and others. The highend models are still being made in Washington and Seki Japan as always, so as long as quality is good on the low end Tawain made knives I say go for it. It helps SOG expand their product line. If someone Buys a low end SOG and likes it, then tries the USA or Japan made SOGs, we have more repeat customers that would not have bought them earlier. SOG seems to agree and so far it's working for them.

I'd go with the SOG, stainless is easier to take care of, AUS 6 and 8 are very easy to sharpen in the field with standard stones or steels. High carbon steel is nice but it take a lot more care to keep from rusting and sometimes there just isnt time to sit and make sure the blade it dry before its sheathed. SOG provides a great sheath with the pup as well, my brother in law, who is a police officer is getting a pup for duty work, as is his parter and that says a lot for the product. This will make for a good test run for the SOG's as Cops are really hard on the knives, cutting those nylon cuffs is a real test of a blade edge. I get to sharpen my bro's blades, so I will be posting a review of how the SOG holds up under hard use as it goes through its daily chores.

hope this helps

SRK hands down. IMO its a better knife with a better sheath. Both the CS SRKa and the SOG SP are sold thru the Army PX system for the same price. When we deployed to Iraq in 2004 both knive sold out at the Ft Lewis PX/MCS. Most guys who had SEAL Pups wished they had bought SRKs and some bought or traded for SRKs in country. Also, the SP sheath's cord/rope cutter cut the crap out of web gear and vehicle seats. Everybody who had one of those put a zip tie thru the rivits on each side of the cut out to block it off.

SOG makes great knives but ... the SRK is carbon steel and will do a better job holding up under outdoor abuse. It's not hard to keep the knife clean enough -- tie a small rag or bandanna to the tie-down loop at the end of the sheath and swab off the blade before sheathing it. Even if you get a little rust, it will only be on the edge, not the black-coated flats. Sharpening will clean off that rust.

The SRK is a classic. It's not expensive and you may be able to get a better price on an SRK Second from www.ltspecpro.com -- the only way you'll know it's a second is by the 2 stamped into the butt.

Another vote for the SRK. SOG knives are well-made but in most cases use inferior stainless steels.
