Hey guys,

This is is my first post in the Traditional forum as I am usually a modern knife user (Chris Reeve, mostly). Lately I have become very interested in adding a traditional slipjoint to balance my collection a little. For one reason or another I am not really thrilled with the nickel silver bolsters and brass liners of most production-made slipjoints. I have also noticed that most of the higher-end custom knifemakers usually use stainless steel for both. Are there any prodcution (i.e. affordable) models out there that use stainless steel? I have looked at the Case/Bose collaborations and I love the Tribal Spear, but would like to know what else might be available that I have overlooked. Thanks in advance for all your advice.

Regards,
Matthew

Hi Matthew,Be careful hanging around this place. Its addictive and also gets expensive.:DNickel silver and brass is the common material for liners and N/S for bolsters.Thats fine with me.It does pick up more light scratches and pocket carry mini dings, but overall is quite durable and easy to clean up and bring back to new looking. There are stainless frame knives out there.I think the new AG Russell knives that have made a great impression here are S.S. frame and bolster. There are a couple of excellent threads here with pics you shouldnt have any trouble finding.

GEC has mede a few lately, I have a sunfish 2010 with steel liners and bolsters
I have also seen some barlows in SS

I hope they make more in the future, still like the nickel silvers and brass thing but SS would be preferred

I have one of the sowbelly trappers and, while it's not as nice as my usual custom slipjoints, I find myself wanting to carry and use it. The knife is well made, feels good in the hand, and, IMHO, is a real winner for its pricepoint.

Hey Guys,

Thanks for the replies. I have seen those AGR folders and I especially like the Sowbelly in Rucarta. They just seem so big. But at that price I could least order one and see if it works for me.

The Chief brand made in China slipjoint knives have stainless steel pins, liners, bolsters and shield. They have quite nice fit and finish.

While not exactly like traditional folders, these knives from AGRussell are very well made and all stainless. Really inexpensive too.

Here's a link to more info posted here on the forum.

Chris.

Do you mean in comparison to most custom folders with stainless construction?

I looked at the AGR knives and they seem to be incredibly well made, but are about $100 out of my current price range (which is under $100). I'm most likely looking at getting a GEC, but they have the brass construction.

The reason I ask is that I've seen a second person now mention that they had a brass slipjoint loosen on them significantly after light to medium use. I'm a little nervous to invest $100 in a knife, only to have it go out of whack, when I could have just ponied up the cash for a $200 knife.

There are plenty of AGR knives for over 100 bucks, but the ones everyone on the forum is talking about right now are all well under 100.

Chris.

I just looked up Chief brand, and interestingly, some of their knives look exactly like CRKT's traditional line. Different handles of course, but identical blades, including the "backwards" blade arrangement of the Congress. Probably all made in the same factory (the CRKT use brass and NS though).
