I received my SS Cricket in plain edge today and I must say it is a very good knife. SS handles, VG10 blade, framelock, smooth clip, what more can you ask for?
Cricket as a tie clip:
One of the first things I did after I got it was put on a tie and use it as a tie clip
. It is a little bit short and a little too heavy for that but it looked very nice. I'll probably use it as a clip for my tie anyways. I bought this knife as a gent's knife and it fills that role very well.
Public reaction:
First thing I thought when I saw the knife was, "What a cute little knife!". A girl in my chemistry lab said that it's a very "cute" and "handy" knife. Other people have said it's a cute knife as well so it seems to be pretty sheeple/NKP friendly.
Pocketability:
It is a very pocketable knife. I love the oval shape when closed because there are no sharp edges. You can reach into your pocket easily without scraping your hand. Also, the knife is very small and thin so you can forget it's even there. The clip is very secure and looks very nice as well. I like the Spyder on the clip. The clip is set up for tip down.
Lockup:
Locks up solidly without any horizontal or vertical blade play. The framelock stops a little over halfway on the blade. I wish it stopped 1/3 of the way so there's more room for wear. The ball detent keeps the blade closed very well so there's not much chance of it opening by accident.
Handle:
I like SS handles. For such a small knife, it feels comfortable in hand. The choil works well and gives good control for precision cutting.
Blade profile and sharpness:
This knife is SHARP. It came sharper than my Native III and I thought that was sharp. So far, it's cut thread, paper, hair, and steak (not necessarily in that order
). I cut a lose piece of thread, nothing special about that. It went through printer paper very easily and cleanly. I then layed the paper on my desk and fillet it. It took a thin layer off of the single piece of paper pretty easily. The Cricket passed the arm hair test with flying colours. Finally, I cut my steak with the Cricket and it handled that very well. The thin blade combined with the very sharp edge went through the steak like butter. The steak was tasty, it was peppercorn. I should buy steak more often. The reverse S shaped blade combined with the choil allows for very intricate cutting. I imagine this profile will be suited for breaking down boxes and cutting more fibrous materials.
Overall, I really like this knife. It's my favorite knife right now, but I just got it yesterday
.
Now for my question. When closing the knife, is there a chance of pushing the lock too far left and deforming it? If I bend it too far left closing, will it cause the frame to lock up even more to the right when open? I don't want to damage my knife but because I'm not used to the thinness of the knife, I sometimes find myself bending the lock too far left.
