SS Dragonfly disassembly?

Finally picked up my first spyderco knife. I was worried it would be a bit too small, but it's just the right size. I like the clip, the VG10, the lockup... the only thing I'm not crazy about is the stainless steel on the front side. To slick. I like that for the clip side, but I have some orange textured G10 I want to use on the front. Are the pivot and rocket arm pins something I can persuade to move, or am I gonna have to drill 'em?

Use a dremel to dremelize the other side.

I have the same knife with a short lanyard it feels very secur in my hand.

It's not just traction. I like the foliage green knife, but I don't like the clip side. The knife I want is half stainless, and half that one. I was gonna use the ghost jade or carbon fiber left from another project, but textured orange might be more suitable. The tape is a good idea in the mean time, since I've got some other knives to do first. It isn't exactly the permanent solution I had in mind though.

Yeah, tape definately is temporary solution. With proper tools, you could make G10 inlays, by carving suitable place into side and attaching the G10 pieces and smoothing things out.

To answer the actual question, the knife is pinned construction. The pins are slightly flared or swelled when they are set, then they are ground flush. Taking one apart is usually not terribly difficult, just insert a couple of small prybars in the blade channel and pry it apart. The tricky part is putting it back together. The holes in the blade and lockbar are going to be too small for most barrel-type screws, amd drilling the holes out will require carbide bits and patience. Even then, there is a good chance that you will alter the lock geometry, rendering the knife unsafe.

I generally tell people "if you have to ask how, don't try it" when it comes to pinned construction,

So they are pins then. The other versions of the knife had rivets so I wasn't sure since I couldn't see the rocker bar pin on the outside if it was just flare set pins. Thought maybe that one could be "nested"(?), but I saw it's outline once I removed the clip.

I got this one in the hopes it could be a fancy money clip knife project. It looked like a perfect blank slate for a knife mod. Aside from the semi-permanent construction... At least I have size on my side so when I inevitably mess up, a redo won't require alot of material cost.

Thanks for the info yablanowitz.

Lookin' kinda rough, but once I get all the pins set and the edges beveled I think it will do nicely... I goofed up a foliage green canvas scale because I used the removed scale for a template. Turns out the tolerances require tighter attention that that. Spaced the pivot to the rocker arm pin alot better on this one

WTF? Your first folder or what? Freakin' magnificent dude!!

How exactly did you get the pins out?

I'd like to take my G10 dragonfly apart so I can do a few minor modifications to the blade.

My question is how do i put it all back together? I've never taken apart a lock back yet. does any one have a procedure of tips on disassembly and reassembly of lockbacks?

thanks,

Ric

btw-the dragon fly is one of my favorites to edc. I have my mini dejavoo in my pocket today.

Yeah, it was my first spyderco and the first folder handle I've done anything with really. I had the right size punch for the pivot pin, so I punched it but I pryed the scales to find the other ones. It actually came apart pretty easy.

Wow, great job.

That looks so effing good.

Thanks. I wasn't sure about the orange, but the mili and the slipjoints look good so I had to try it.

Well the SS one is pinned together, so had to use new pins and set them with ball peen hammer back into the new scale I made. I also used a larger diameter plastic washer between the g10 and the bronze one to reduce any friction it might have since I didn't use a steel liner.

On your's all you'll need is the right size torx bit. When you're done just put it back together the way it came apart.

I'm really likin' the little guy. Carries effortlessly in my back pocket. It's such a handy little blade.
