Hi

I got a Jnr Calypso for myself and a SS Dragonfly as a gift. I find the Dragonfly very tight to open compared to the Calypso.
I this normal?

Agreed. I have opened my dragonfly over 500 cycles and still it is so tight that I cannot perform a drop open. All of my other Spyderco knives (12 of them) do not have this problem. Anyone @ Spyderco or anyone else know why?

I have played with my Calypso Jnr to do quick drop openings and tried it with the dragonfly, I manage to do a drop open with the dragonfly. I guess it is the weight of the handle. Thumb opening is still awkward and tight.:)

Hi Kitchen Freak. Welcome to the Spyderco forum. Sorry you're having a problem. Is the difficulty in the tightness of the blade or the ergos? It is a small knife and sometimes some people have difficulty with the size. When you open the knfe with two hands, does the blade feel tight?

The Dragonfly is one of my favorite knives. I give the SS version as a gift now and then. The last few I bought were all relatively tight compared to my original. I did not find this objectionable. In fact, I was tempted to keep the last one instead of giving it away. The thing I liked about the stiffness of opening was the complete lack of side to side blade wobble. Although Architect posts to the contrary, I would think the blade would loosen up a little over time. All things considered, I'd rather have a knife that's a bit tight than really loose.

I had the same complaint about the last SS Dragonfly that I bought. It was just too hard to open for comfort. I'm not sure why that particular model has such a stiff spring, none of my other Spydercosw do, but I eventually got frustrated enough to find another home for it.

Except for the overly-strong spring I liked the design. If I could find one with a more moderate feel I'd buy it.

Hi Sal

When I got the Knife the blade was very tight. I have opened and closed it so much now that it seems more loose than in the beginning. Ergo wise it could have been a problem since I was used to the Calypso. I have handled a SS Native in a store and it was relatively tight as well. Could be common to all SS models.

On the other hand I do agree with ptn that it is better having a sturdy knife than a loose knife. Since this is a gift for my father and he most probably will open it with 2 hands it is not such a great problem.

I must admit that the SS dragonfly is a beautifull little folder which makes it hard to even give as a gift. The compensation is that I am stuck with my Calypso Jr which I adore second to my wife and dog:cool:
