I just recieved my second Spyderco the other day!! a SS handled Pegasus and it is definately turning out to be an excellent choice for a small plain edge edc (my main edc is a G-10 Harpy and it is the most useful knife I have ever owned but sometimes ya just need that plain edge). My question is this. I wipe the blade with a thin coat of WD-40 as often as needed to prevent rust. What steps do I need to take to prevent rust on the SS handle. I can't see wiping it down with anything slippery as the ss handle already has very little to grip.

I don't think you need to worry about rusting handles. Mariners and SS Harpys are made for wet and salty conditions. I bet that all SS Spydies do have the same handle steel. I live by coast and have never noticed even stain in my spyders (Baltic sea isn't wery salty though). Scratch are more likely but you can sand the away with wet and dry sandpaper.

After pondering this awhile I decided that likely Spyderco uses a recipe for stainless blade steel that will be hard and tough enough to hold a good edge, and still be somewhat stain resistant.

The handles on the other hand, need only be really, really stain resistant and tough enough to do the job that a handle has to do. I would imagine that the stainless steel used for handles probably uses a LOT more chromium, for example.

On some of my SS-handled Spydies, when I've carried/used them in certain conditions they will occasionally show a very *tiny* bit of brown specks in the grain of the handle's satin finish, but nothing serious at all. You can sometimes scratch it off with a thumbnail, or use OOOO-steel wool and mineral oil to wipe it with the grain of the finish and no problem.

I think the SS handles are extremely resistant to rust overall, maybe like some SS kitchen sinks (?) Perhaps a 300 series SS?
