Okay, so I cruised over to www.equipped.org and saw their report on the SHOT show this year. To my surprise, there was reports of a SS Kiwi, AND he had pictures!!! Two questions:

WHY have I not heard of this before now?

and

WHEN are we gonna get them?

I thought of getting a SS Cricket, but if I can get a SS Kiwi, I think I'll wait!! Anyone else?

Sincerely,
Anthony

Handled the SS Kiwi (and all the other hot stuff :D ) at the IWA trade fair last weekend. That´s the one I want! It´s SOOO sweet!

I have to agree with the guy who said he didn't want to pay a premium to get bone inserts that he has to be careful with. Now, for me its not the bone (I after all really like natural materials in a knife handle), its the having to be careful with it part. I carry on my person 2 Spydercos at all times. One is my Delica (which I can't thank JoeShmoe2000 enough for) that I got this summer, and the other is my Native. Now, what do these two knives have in common? They're both SS. I like SS for knives that I'll carry all the time because I don't really care if they get "character marks."
Some may disagree with me, but I just can't carry a knife that I'm going to care if it gets damaged. Now, the exceptions are my Gene Ingram knives, and will be my Don Morrow Trapper; but for the most part I don't want my knives damaged. I always want Spyderco to come out with premium steels in their SS models. I'm not even sure I'm going to get one of the SS Delicas because I know I wouldn't carry it. The SS Cricket was great because they were coming out with it in VG10, I'm hoping that the same will be for the Kiwi (and that they'll actually produce the thing), because the blade shape is very much more usable on the Kiwi than the Cricket for general tasks. Now, even for the SS Kiwi I'd get a CRK Umfaan pouch, but that's just because the thing will be in the bottom of my pocket where the lint bunnies reign supreme!

SpyderJon- I don't really understand why you think that you would have to be "careful" with the bone insert on the Kiwi.

I haven't taken a hammer to my Kiwi, but I carried it off and on pretty regularly over a 4 month period and I wouldn't say that the bone shows any wear at all. In fact, the sort of "camo" effect of the jigging and the blackening of the depressions makes it much more resistant to obvious wear than say, a hardwood insert would show.

I am not very interested in an SS Kiwi because it just add weight, IMHO. Now a titanium-bodied Kiwi - that's a different story!

I think an engraved SS Kiwi would be very nice. Maybe Spyderco will do a run if enough people ask(beg :))

Blades

Architect, I think I set a bad image up for everyone with my post. I am not implying that there's anything inherently wrong with the Kiwi in its original form. Instead, I would say its a problem from my end. The fact is that with FRN I don't care about the handles being gouged. My SS knives are the same way- in fact I like to notice how the scratching on the handles is making them have really great character. Just like I wouldn't put my trapper through hard use (hard use here meant to imply using the blade/knife without caring what really happens to it), I wouldn't do that with an original Kiwi, but I WOULD do that with a SS version. I don't use my natural handled slipjoints that hard either, and for me (at least in my mind anyway) I know that I look at the Kiwi as an odd slipjoint that locks. Kind of like a Case locking wharncliff. I just couldn't bring myself to use it to its full potential, and thus why buy it? A SS version on the other hand would be used often, especially in locations where they're particularly draconian about their knife regulations. I can only justify buying so many knives, and they must be ones that I'll use. Even my trapper will get used, but it will also have a belt sheath to keep it from getting pocket damage. Character marks are one thing after all, but change marks are the worst! I hope I've cleared things up a little.

Sincerely,
Anthony

I know that I will eventually have to pick a SS Kiwi but for now, I'm setting my sights at the SS Cricket. The reason being for the clip, great blade shape, and framelock. I don't really agree about the Kiwi having a better bladeshape than the Cricket. IMO, they are about equal in the Cricket's reverse S works wonders on alot of things, of course not to count out the Kiwi.
