SS matt finish

without using a coating what is the best way to get a nice matt finish
i hand sanded with 320 grit but to me its still has too much glare
im thinking sandblasting but is there any other good ways i would have to get the blasting done by a friend
its going to a marine and must be matt

Ferric chloride, AKA PCB Etchant, available from Radio Shack will provide a pretty even matte surface if you don't wish to bead/sandblast. Mix it 50/50 with distilled water wash the blade good and set in in the container with the etchant for about 5 minutes. Take it out and scrub with a steel wool pad, under running water, and see if it's dull enough. If not stick it back in for a few and repeat the process.

You can reuse the ferric chloride, so don't throw it away because it may change color when you use it, if you do.

i did not think that worked on stainless steels like the cpm154 that i using

Yep, just like grinding belts don't care what kind of carbon based steel goes into them, neither does acid. It will eat them all.;)

I've used in on 440C which has a lot more chromium in it that CPM154 and no problems at all.
