Hi all,
I just bought a SS Progrip with a straight edge from Cutlery Shoppe mail order company and the 2002 Spyderco catolog says the blade steel is VG-10 and when I got my knife the blade is marked ATS-55. Does any one know why?
I thought I was getting VG-10. How much better is VG-10 in trems of edge holding and overall toughness than ATS-55 or vice-versa?

They probably had old stock left. I ordered my BM 910HS last november from an online store and it still had the old style logo. It depends on how popular both the store and models are really. If you are unhappy they will probably refund your purchase. Personally, the only things I have heard bad about the ATS-55 is that it has a tendancy to rust. I have a Matriarch with ATS-55 and I wipe it down on occasion and it has been fine.

If it's not too late I would try and send it back. I would take VG-10 over ATS-55 any day of the week. They simply sent you an older model. Truth be told, however, they didn't do anything wrong unless they advertised it as VG-10.

For a while I would recommend that all forumites specifically ask for the VG-10 versions on all models that are changing over! That way there won't be a dissapointment when the dealer ships an older model.

Get the VG-10. I think that you will find that it will outperform ATS-55 substantially.

How much difference is there between ATS-55 and VG-10 in just toughness like edge chipping out?

If it is not much I think I will keep it because I hate to package up and send things off and not have the knife. Last time(about 5 years ago) it took over 6 months to get a police model with a plain edge to me. They said Spyderco was behind on orders and that is what took so long. I think that was kind of funny because it wasn't a custom order/knife so why would it take over 6 months to get a common production knife? I love Spyderco's and I would bet if they got their heat treat right ATS-55 should be a great steel....I hope!;)
