Several slipjoint makers at Blade this past weekend were trying to tutor me on spinning or doming pins on my slipjoints. Key word is "trying". I could have sworn that they mentioned 306L alloy. I have found 316L, 308L, and 309L....but no 306L. Did I hear incorrectly? What do the slipjoint makers use that spin their pins? Thanks.

They use a head spinner.
Spinners are not necessary if you learn how to peen pins.. They were designed as a production tool. In making a hand made knife, the time saved by spinning pin heads is not worth it.

316/316L is a good choice for spinning heads on pins - is quite ductile and fairly resistant to work hardening.

316L it is then. Thanks very much. Bill...I have always just peined my pins and sanded smooth and a quick buff and it worked well. You do get some odd ones occassionally... some that fall into hollows and grooves in stag from time to time , etc....but worst of all..an occassional crack in scale material. I think that if I spin the pins forming a small washer at the same time...I con get away from odd lookigng heads on pins and do away with the occassional split of materials. I do agree that spinning was used for quick industrial applications. Thank you everyone. 316L it is.
