I recently aquired a SS1 Sterile SOG Bowie from a seller that I frequent on E-Bay. It is in pristine "Never Used" condition, still in the cardboard sheath. The leather sheath, which has never been used, has SOG on the bottom but, of the same design as my original 1st gen numbered (non facet tip) and non numbered (facet tip) S1's. The original white box has the SS1 Sterile SOG Bowie label with bar code on the end, Lynnwood, WA address on the side and even has the mini brochure inside.
I have only heard of this variant from one person on the SOG collector web page but, that's it, never any mention of it anywhere else. It is identical to the regular S1 Bowie with facet tip except the SF shield and dedication lettering arn't there. Original square box SOG logo and Seki Japan are the only markings on the blade.
I would like to find out from Chris or any other members, just how rare is this variant?

Thanks,
Ken

I have one too...Same knife but cooler sheath with the crest.. I dont think u can find one nowadays without the leather handle being semi worn.. Are u gonna put something on that handle? It is rare from what i understand because i read somewhere it came out before all the S1C's came out.. The original ones SOG made I think are the rarest and they have numbers BUT different than the S1C which I think SOG made 2 groups of 1000 or so... The CREST on the sheath is the key to the age of that knife.. They are nice!!

I have 6 S1's in total, including the SS1. Since I purchased my first S1 (original) serial numbered back in the late 80's (I'm 43 now), I have been obsessed with this model. I also have many other vintage and newer SOG fixed blades in my collection but the S1 is my King Blade. My recent purchase of the SS1 variant is the "White Elephant" in my collection.

In reference to the handles, all are in pristine condition on my S1's except for one. I have one S1 that the previous owner allowed to rust badly. They had the rust and blue finish media blasted so, it is a subdued silver finish (severe pitting and all), with leather handle washers that look like they've been to hell and back. This is my user S1.
The first S1 had it's serial number on the blade and the S1C's number is on the side of the front guard.

Thats what i meant.. serial number on the blade where the orginal SOGS (not the original BARKERS).. Though i bet the SEKI JAPAN SOGS are as good as u can get... I also have a SOG S2 trident made in SEKI-JAPAN with the micarta washer.. that is a nice knife.. same as the S1 but made for marine battle:o)

I have one now in brand new condition that I purchased directly from SOG. The other one was a user but ended up selling it. Here is the sterile user:

Hey Dax,
I enjoy having both the S2 Trident and Recon Bowie but, never aquired the Scuba Demo. Col. Ben Baker designed a functional knife for field use but, it was also designed to be a "throw away" knife in the field. The presentation version with engraving had a nicer finish of the same design. You might still see a few of these original's come up for sale on e-bay from between 1,200 to 5,000. Spencer Frazer and Hattori designed and produced a timeless classic based on the Ben Baker design. It's manufacture and materials are exceptional to the point that I'd say it is on the same level as my classic Randal #1-7.

the S1 was the first SOG I bought and I've used it quite a bit, a great knife. Never quite got around to getting an S2 Trident, big mistake on my part.

Cheers,

Carl

Hello Ken.. I was lucky enough to get a S2 Trident, and Recon Bowie, but I have had a har dtime getting a Scuba as well.. They are a beautiful time piece.. One of these days if i can score one under 300.. I was lucky enough to get my Midnight Tigershark so I cant complain to much along with a RECON Gov model.. The scuba has been on my list for awhile.. THanks for that info!!
