This was an accidental 'bay purchase that my 11 month old hit 'bid' on

I didn't want this knife, but I'm actually enjoying how nice this thing snaps and feels in the hand. It seemed to be well taken care of, and obviously sharpened quite few times.

What I'm confused about is the shield, and I dont think I need to point out the oddity here.
The shield looks to be original to the knife, or at least be on there a long time. Is this possibly a factory mistake, or were these trappers ever sold as improved muskrats?

Has to be a replacement shield, as it's not a muskrat or improved muskrat in any way.
I figured as much. Upon closer inspection I can see that the knife has been cleaned and polished up by a previous owner, or by the seller. If this was cleaned up by someone who moves a bunch of knives it wouldn't be a surprise if they took a shield from a muskrat that was too beat up for sale, and replaced the one that may have been lost from this one.

Your 11 month old has an eye for unique traditionals already :)
Seems so, I'll probably gift this one to her when she gets older, since technically she purchased it! I suppose I should be proud the first purchase she ever made was an old US made slipjoint :D
