Has anyone gotten one of the slings from Survival Sheath Systems? I am talking about the David Vs. Goliath weapon. It looks pretty cool, The hardest part of making it would probably be sewing the nylon pouch.

I've not seen the sling you refer to, but I've made a couple of my own....it's pretty easy and the web contains some good sites explaining how....

I used two pieces of 0.25" dia. x 32" braided nylon cord and made a leather pouch about 6" x 2". Put a couple of holes into each end of the leather, tie the cord on....away you go.

Search the web for slinging techniques - there are several, but my favorite is the across-the-chest-overhand-baseball throw.

Slings are mucho fun, and definately not worth buying. The ones I made were just shy of fingertip to fingertip length, with paracord strings and leather pouch.

I put a fixed loop at the end of one string, and typically put it over my first two fingers. The other line went under my last two fingers and over the first two, pinched against the index finger with my thumb, I open my thumb and last two fingers, stone flies. I use a whirling-type throw, swing it around a couple times, and let loose. You can get absolutely _amazing_ distance and power, but I was never successful enough at accuracy to hit something animal size reliably, but I could launch an egg-sized rock 200 meters with enough force it would shatter (like lots of little-bitty pieces, not just crack) upon hitting a concrete wall.

I did try 'grapeshot' once or twice, with marble-size stones. Range was very short, but I think I could expect to actually kill small game in that manner. It is how I would hunt were I surviving with a sling, though I prefer snares to hunting any day.

Even if you don't feel competent with a sling to use it to hunt, they can be useful, worth the time and trouble to make. Even beginners can toss stone(s) 200 yards, creating enough noise to scare game away from an alternative exit. Works on deer in heavy brush/chaparral. Good for creating diversions in an E&E situation, as well as hunting. And don't overlook the power of a slung shot in close quarters. Wait until you can't miss, or even use as a bludgeon.

Take up no space, weight is neglible. When not in use, they can do double duty. Tie to your walking staff and throw it over your back while you climb. A sling for a sling. ;)
I've made them before using the tongue of an old boot for the soft leather pouch, and leather bootlaces. No reason why Nylon cord/cloth pouch wouldn't work as well or better.
