I am looking to buy my first MT. I am considering the Leatherman Super Tool 300 and have seen some mixed reviews on it. The tools look perfect for what need but I have heard they can be stiff in deploying. I would love to hear some opions from people who own and use the 300.

Thanks,

Paul

From my experience with about a dozen Leathermen, the implements seem to usually start off stiff, but loosen up with a bit of use, how much depending on the sample. That can vary from a few uses to a few weeks, but has been such a minor issue for me I don't remember how long it took for everything to break in smoothly on any of them. I've heard complaints that sometimes they don't slick up no matter what, but I've never had a problem. A drop or two of lubricant might help, but usually I don't bother. I kind of enjoy the ritual of working the implements of a new Leatherman while watching re-runs of Antiques Road Show on TV (wife's choice), pausing occasionally for beverage breaks. It's a great way to veg out of an evening :) .

After 2 years of use, I can highly recommend the Super Tool 300 as a tough, reliable workhorse, substantial and nothing that can fall off and get lost. All blades come out easily, even without removing work gloves (try that with a Swisstool :grumpy:). Much as I like/love the others, when I'm expecting the possibility of serious work (when I don't have access to dedicated tools, that is), this is the one I reach for. Last summer when we got hit with hurricane force winds and power was out for days, I did a lot of quicky repairs with mine. Better than a comfort blanket. :D

+1 and if you want the same performance and tools in a compact version try the Rebar. Well, hell, get both.

Thanks for the responses fellas! I just bought the Rebar this morning and it's excellent. It kinda makes me wonder why I waited so long to get one, I can see this thing saving me all kinds of time!!!

i like the rebar way better than the supertool 300 - lighter and fits my hand better. light enough for belt carry too (i can't tell a difference between it and the juice s2 on my belt). i figured if i need the extra toughness of a supertool 300 over the rebar i'd rather use a full blown pliers/etc. to begin with and it's more ergonomic too.

Simply adore my ST300. It's the first tool I've bought in a long time where I don't feel like I've compromised much. The Rebar is on my short list.

I love the ST300 and Rebar.....s pliers head. :D I ditched the handles in favor of the surge and wave.

Tightening snow chains... they have this stupid cam lock system that only works with a special wrench... I lost my special wrench. Grip and twist and they snap right off.

I've carried the Supertool for about 2 years now and it is excellent. As others have said it will loosen up with use.I like the larger, locking implements with nothing to fall off or lose. Likely my favorite Leatherman.

I have had mine for three years. I have two and broke the tips off of both on the pliers. They sent me two new ones and I have loved and used them since. Not for edc. I like them for around the house, in bags, and outdoor work

I have a bunch of leathermans and I really like them. I have a ST300 on the way to keep in my hiking pack and I just got a sidekick for EDC.

It's kinda moot by now but I just got my ST300 in the other day. This thing is HUGE. The knife blades have a ball detent to keep them closed and they were really hard to open the first time. So hard that I thought they were stuck closed and there was something wrong with it. After opening them 3 or 4 times it broke in and became easy to open the knife blades. Actually this is the easiest leatherman to get the tools out that I have ever owned, the rest of the tools didn't even need to be broken in.
