Stabalizing wood

Does anyone know the name of the chemical that is used to stabalize wood? It is similar to anti-freeze. thanks
 
We went thru this subject a year or two ago and noone ever did find out what the stuff is. Sure would be nice to know, huh.
 
Possibly you mean PEG, polyethyline-glycol. PEG

This stuff does not harden wood but fills the pores with a waxy substance that prevents cracking. I've used it for carving green wood but don't think it would work all that well for knife scales.
