stabiling services--is this a good deal?

I recently got some info in a stabilizing service someone is offering. I don't know if he has a website or not. All I have is his email addy. He offers this on a wood working forum I used to be a part of. In his email to me he said he uses Resinol 90C and charges about $10 a pound after stabilizing.

So does this sound like a good deal?

If the piece of wood weighs 5 oz and weighs 10 oz after being stabilized, I can see paying for the 5oz of stabilizing material. Is it normal to pay for the 5 oz of material plus the original 5oz the wood weighs? Or is that what is added on so the guy can make a little profit?

I believe it is typical to charge for finished weight after stabilizing. Even if your wood doesn't take on any additional weight, he's still performed the service. As far as good deal, the price seems in the ballpark, just have to decide if the end product is what you want. I'd take a look a the other popular 'knifemaker' stabilizing services, they should all have their prices on their websites.

Good luck with it, Craig

The normal price of the two largest stabilizers is about $13/Lb for one pound and about $8.50-9/Lb for 10 pounds or more. This is based upon the finish weight. It is best to try different guys because some are much better than others. I find K&G in Arizona the best. Don't be surprized if you get different looking results at different times on the same wood. The polymers are expensive and are reused by all. The more they are reused, the darker the finished product.

Hi Pete, you did pay attention :) I'm headed back to Oregon in a week for the summer. Got tons of wood to cut!!

Thanks for the replies guys. Sorry I didn't get back to this sooner. I think I might give him a try and see hownit works out.

I would stick with the pros. In my opion 90c by its self is not a good wood stabilizer. Many pepole have tried it including are very on Mark from Its a burl and they have all gotten less then steller results. Mark now sends all his stuff to K&G and so would I. Brett
