Hello,

I am new to stabilized woods and wondered if anyone would know the following:

-how does the stabilized wood last over time compared to natural wood?
-will the stabilized wood yellow or start to form cracks?
-how does the handle feel compared to a natural wood handle?

thanks

I'll answer this from my collector experience:

My oldest is probably 20 years and it's held up fine - not a user
Properly stabilized it shouldn't crack, mine have not yellowed
I can't tell the difference in feel

I recently needed some stabilized wood for a couple of handles, I bought from an established seller on Ebay. The fellow making the handles told my it was very poorly stabilized, I was surprised being they had flawless feedback. I'm going to need some more and I'm not sure where I'll get it. Ankrom Exotics is a company that stabilizes and is owned by the son of maker Bill Ankrom. Their product is used by many makers, he'll stabilize your wood.

Not all woods need or benefit from stabilization.
If done at all it is best done professionally.
If done professionally, it will be denser and more stable, less prone to movement or cracking.
If both types of wood (stabilized and non) are taken to a high polish and waxed etc, then they feel similar in hand.

I use a lot of stabilized woods on regular EDC type knives and on kitchen knives. In fact seldom use anything else on a kitchen knife. The stabilized woods hold up very well and don't feel any different to me than a non stabilized wood handle. I have never seen it crack or yellow. Definitely buy from a pro source. I would suggest K and G or AZ Ironwood.
