"Stabilized Wood"

I was wondering what was meant by the term "stabilized wood?" Is it anything more than aged and dried?

Differs by industry, for knife making it generally means epoxy or similarly impregnated.

I don't like the way it feels or looks but understand that highly spalted wood which is inherently weakened by the same rot that gives it all that figure is much more durable when stabilized.
