how deep does professional stabilizing go? would it be feasible to stablize a large block instead of thin cross sections?

All the way! Mike at WSSI has done 4" x 4" x 16" of amboyna burl for me and the penetration is complete.

Rob!

I have Mike do my wood in blocks that will cut to scales and handle blocks.Usually they are 5-6X2X10-16",but I have had 6X4X8 blocks done. The stabilization goes all the way through,if the wood is suitable for stabilization. The dryness of the wood is the most important thing.7-10% (or less) is what you need. Cut the wood so it will have the desired pattern oriented as you want it.Allow a little extra for trimming and possible warpage.

Sorry to take the topic in a slightly different direction but can anyone tell me where to get hold of these big blocks of wood?
Thanks.

Mike

thanks, that's what i wanted to know, and btw stacy just in case you didnt get my email thanks for the pipe sections! I'll finally get to try some stuff this year. Would a big block of ebony work out fine?

If you mean for stabilizing, there is not any need to stabilize ebony.Mike can do it,but it is one of those woods that really doesn't need it.

Midden - You can get big blocks of maple burl at wood supply shops that sell to turners.Woodcraft has lots, cheap, too.Ebay sellers have plenty of turning blocks in many species.Try Gilmer Exotic Woods, Cook Woods, and many internet wood suppliers if you do a google on any particular wood. I have bought whole stump burls of buckeye burl and saved a bunch. I cut it up with a chain saw.
