what is the best way to work or finish stablized wood, such as IRON wood.madrona,ect.any help would be great,,, royboy

I basically treat it as a piece of plastic. That is essentially what it is. I will shape mine on the belt down to 220 grit, then take it to 800 grit by hand. Stabilized wood can burn easy on the belt grinder. I finish off with a white rouge buff. Protect your LUNGS too! Alway wear a mask or respirator.

Not much info hope it helps.

I've been taking mine to 1200 grit on the grinder without a problem. If you start burning, you need to switch to a fresher belt. I then finish up to 2000 grit and polish with diamond paste. BTW, I don't think Ironwood stabilizes well due to its' natural oiliness.

I've never had a problem with it burning, since most stabilized woods are fairly soft to begin with. I usually take it to 600 grit, hand sanding, then buff with white compound until it looks like a mirror. Some of the very soft woods need to be sanded to a finer grit before polishing to avoid undercutting.

Yeah, I don't think Desert Ironwood is "stabilized" except by nature maybe. One giveaway is that it certainly DOES burn if you don't use fresh belts. Hard stuff!
