Hey Guys
I'm looking for a good Stacked Leather Handled Knife. My Dad had one in the 70's I used as a kid.(loved that knife) He called it his Bait knife, God forbid we used his fillet knife to cut up bait, or other tasks. It looked a lot like the Case Leather Hunter 365-5 SS.
So...I bought one. This is a show piece. Fit and finish are great, sheath well crafted, very sharp.

Now the bad news, it is a bit wimpy. The handle is uncomfortably small for me, making the index finger guard almost useless. The blade is thin, and so is the tang permitting a lot of flex. Under heavy use I could see laying the blade over.

I'm looking for a this type of classic style knife, 5 to 6 inch blade. With a larger handle, and a bit more durable (thicker) blade/tang.
Randal Knives are out of my price range. I have looked (on- line) at the Ka Bar versions, but prefer to buy American. Just my preference.

Thanks for the help,

NTS

You could look for a Blackjack model 1-7 in stacked leather, or an old SOG Recon Bowie. Actually, Blackjack would have few models to look at...

Kabar MK1, the stacked leather version, and I believe its US made as well. I've used the kraton version and its a great knife.

Blackjack is actually the company that I first thought of though. They have many different knives with that type of look to them.

I think Moosez45 a mod on the Becker forum can steer you to some older Blackjacks with leather handles.

The Fallkniven Northern Lights series are very nice. A tad spendy and not American, if those are deal breakers.

Also you could look around on auction sites for an old Western States or something like that.

I looked at both Fallkniven and Blackjack, both beautiful. The US made Ka-Bar wasn't what I was looking for. The Blackjack series are more in my price range. That is as long as my Wife doesn't find out.
Does anyone have personal experience with Blackjack Knives. I don't really know anything about the company, A2 tool steel, quality, ect.

Thanks again for the help,

NTS

I have a Blackjack model 5 with the stacked leather handle and it is a first rate knife. Insanely sharp, great sheath and reasonably priced. I would really like it to be a little smaller but I got a really good deal on it and it is a great knife for outdoor use.

A2 steel is a good quality carbon steel. It should be pretty tough, but sadly, I don't have any experience with it myself. I have also heard good things about blackjack, but I don't have any experience with them personally either.

And to be clear, the "US made" kabar isn't JUST the kabar USMC. The MK1 is patterned after an old navy knife from the 1800's.

Here is the model i was referring to, just for clarity.

I'd like to see some more feedback on the blackjacks, as I've not seen much around here.

I've got a Blackjack 1-7, an older carbon steel model from Effingham. It is an exceptionally well made knife, very balanced. It feels light in the hand. Craftsmanship from Blackjack is very high. Once you have it in hand, you wont be sorry.
