Hello Everyone!

This is my first time posting in the Buck forum. I don't know much about Buck knives but took this knife on trade. I was unable to find any information on it. Could anybody explain what the inverted v next to the 301 denotes? How common is this knife and when do you suppose it was made? Thank you all for your help!

Welcome!! The inverted v is a date code for the year of manufacture, which is 1988 in this case. The 300 series, to which the 301 obviously belongs, is normally produced with black sawcut deldrin handles, but periodically limited editions are/were done with other types of handles, such as stag as in the case of your knife. It's a great model and I'll bet you got the better end of the trade. 300 Bucks will most likely be along in the not too distant future with additional information.

Welcome to the forums, nice little knife you got the better end and i don't even know what you traded.LOL/JK!

lol I definetely didn't trade anything special. I collect mainly antique English knives, but knew this was a nice knife. I traded a set of scope rings I had marked at $25. The guy offered this knife and a Queen electricians knife. I told him I didn't know what they were worth (I really don't) but figured the Buck alone was worth the 25 bucks. He gave me the Queen anyways. I was satisfied and he was happy with the rings. Now I'm really happy :D

Not much to add from good info. above. Nice sambar stag stockman, hope opposite side is a close match to photo side. Some aren't. Looks unsharpened. Offered in 1989, in 301,303 and 309. Made in house. Wish I had only paid 25$ for my example. You may grant yourself a big smile without guilt, for a good deal. If you decide you don't like it, it is worth more than 25$. {:- )

Knew something wasn't right. Stags were offered in the 1989 catalog. This knife has date mark of 1988, as per past info. from Joe Houser and others, sometimes last years blades that were leftovers were put on the next years scales or to make it sound better, production of new years model was started early and some existing parts were used up early in production. Either way you got a good knife.
