is there a wax or some kind of protector that one should should use on the antler? just curious, I have heard of wax but I don't know what kind or if anything else works better.

Thanks

Properly cured stag, antler, horn is pretty stable stuff and doesnt require protectants. For maintenance I would recomend hooflex.

Karda, a quick search on the web shows that hooflex is a hoof supplement for horses. Is this the same as what you are saying? What benefits does it have over wax?

I use a hard natural carnuba wax melted into the warmed antler... it is cooking grade so it won't affect using your knife around food, as well it helps with polish and waterproofing both (and it smells nice)

I soak the handles in straight mineral oil overnight, about once a year. This supposedly keeps the stag from drying out and shrinking, although like a previous poster said, stag is pretty stable stuff.

Wax doesnt hydrate the material, hooflex does.
