It's 20 degrees outside, so these were done fast and my skills don't do it justice, but here is my new Stag Bulldog Copperhead.

After websearching last night, I noticed that Bulldog Stag knives have at least 2 different shields and all the ones that have my shield are "second-cut" Stag, so I assume that's what this is??? Still looks good to me.

I also solved the carbon/stainless riddle, I put a small drop of vinegar on one of the blades enar the base and let it set for a few minutes and wiped it off, it left a faint grey dot where the vinegar was, so carbon steel it is.

Very nice looking knife! Congrats! The pics are good also. I've always liked the Copperhead patterns.

TLC,
That looks like the first cut to me...just tapered at the bolsters like the Germans seem to favor.

Nice piece.

One of the custom makers that was at this show that I have bought from and he works in stag and elk alot, even he was impressed with this one.

Nice knife, but that's not second cut stag, that's first cut!!
Second cut is when the nice gnarly layer is gone as in cut off and used.; it's the next or second layer. It can be jigged or smooth like bone.

Thanks for the info on second verses first cut stag, Bulldog must be switching their shields around, all the ones I saw with this "acorn" shield (that is what that shield is called isn't it?) were second-cut, but they were new, this one is 1998.

I believe that shield is in the "Crest" family...maybe known as a "Federal" (like Federal Marshall) shield. The "Acorn" is shaped like an acorn, with a stem at the top...and is in the "Profile" family.

But, you know...I could be mistaken. Just ask my kids. :o :D

Thanks, I wasn't sure, it sorta looked like an acorn to me, but shields are something I haven't read much about.

More homework!

Great looking knife !!!....VERY handsome with such nice stag. Here is a photo of a Boker carbon stag Copperhead I recently purchased. I'm impressed with all those fine German carbon slipjoints out there !!!....most under $50 !!!

That's a real beaut' Gramps. I love the prices on them also, I actually gave 39.50 for mine total.

The more I stare at it, the more I think I got a real good deal!

There is just something about the gnarly first quality stag they use on those Bulldogs like yours....... it's REALLY handsome. I have a 4" Bulldog Trapper with stag scales very similar in appearance to yours. I think its hard to beat a Bulldog slipjoint for quality and value !

You may not want to answer this question, but where'd you buy it? I'm really getting into the more traditional pocket knives lately (carbon steel...congress, trapper, and copperhead patterns, with no locking mechanisms). They usually have thin blades, and just seem to cut better than everything else out there.

I got it from a dealer at a local gun & knife show. He doesn't do online sales, he's 83 so computers aren't his thing. Cool guy, I've bought from him for years, and he's one of those walking encyclopedias of pocketknife info'.
