Stag handle maintenance?

I bought a bottle of food grade mineral oil and applied one coat which was instantly absorbed. The second coat was just as quick. At that point I quit not wanting to cause splitting from overloading it. What is the best method for maintaining stag handles?

Don’t add anymore oil. Wax is usually recommended.

Oil softens and darkens stag. The deer don't use it, nor should you.
A coat of paste wax, buffed with a shoe brush is a good treatment.
