I had an order with Randall for a Pathfinder with the Model 25 handle.
But A Model 255 knife is the only one Ive gotten from Randall and disliked. The stag was pale and smooth. I might as well have ordered micarta. I dont like to look at it. Whats the point of an ugly Randall?
I wanted the knife redone, with better stag. It turns out that RMK is too busy for side jobs redoing handles. Thats fair enough, active military guys before civilians. But that Randall # 255 knife should have been a camping friend. Instead its a drawer queen.
Again, I had an order in for a Pathfinder with the Model 25 handle. I called Randall to ask if there was a way to insure that my current order was made with a good stag roll? Could someone hand pick the roll for me? Not exactly. I was told I could supply the shop with my choice of stag, and they would use that.
I ordered a straight 1 Sambar stag roll. Nice color and figure. It looked good in person, so I mailed it to Orlando.
When they got it they sent me some papers. One was a permission. Another a fact sheet. Turns out that when Randall uses customer supplied handle materials it costs an extra $20.00. And that handle isnt covered by the Randall warranty.
I dont understand the $20.00 surcharge. I can sort of understand the No warranty on customer provided materials. Im guessing RMK has to cover their ass for legal reasons.
Came the daycome the knifeand I was delighted. Buying my own stag was a great investment. The smith had positioned the stag to look good, and to fit a hand well. My hand at least. Im going to like using this one.
Alas, there was garlic in the baklava. Id ordered a wrist thong. No thong was in evidence. No big deal, I replace those thongs with red paracord anyway. Trouble is, the knife had never been drilled for a wrist thong.
The guy I talked to at Randall asked, The simple fix is to accept it as is and well refund you. Do you need a wrist thong? Are you out in the water all the time?
I said, Not all the time. But enough that I want my knife dangling from my wrist rather than diving for the bottom of the lake.
He said, Send it right back. Well get it taken care of and back to you quick.
I said, Other than that its a great looking knife. Im really pleased with it.
He said, Looks like providing your own stag worked for you.
When my shipment arrived they drilled for the wrist thong and shipped it back the same day.
When I called to get tracking information I discovered that the guy Id mostly talked to was none other than Garry Randall. I thanked him and said, Ive got nothing but good to say about Randalls customer service.
