Here's an example of some "home-made" stag jigged bone:

These overlays were cut off the back of a very thick set of stabilized giraffe bone. After I fit them to the folder and sanded them to shape, I noticed they looked a bit too plain. So, I took them back off and did some more work.....

First, I took a propane torch and scorched the surface to get the "antique" gold hilights. Using a Dremel tool and small spherical bit, I cut the grooves in each overlay and then knocked the "fuzzies" off with 320 grit sandpaper.

The next step was to coat the surfaces with a mixture of browish-black paint. After the paint dried, I simply sanded the excess paint off until the stag figure appeared! :D

I hope you like the end result! :)

Where do you get giraffe bone? And what kind of prices? Can you get it 10 inches long (for a sword handle)?

I usually pick mine up at shows from Nico Bernard.

You can email him at: bernardn@iafrica.com

I got a pair of 10" long slabs a few years ago. Tell Nico what you're looking for and he'll fix you right up!

Tom, do you mind telling what you have going on with the pivot pin? It looks really nice, but I can't figure out how you did it or what exactly it is.

Awesome knife by the way! Incredible blade!

Thanks, guys!

Chris:

I machined a titanium collar that fits around the pivot screw. It has steps in it that give you something to grab onto when removing the knife from your pocket. ;)

Tom, the stabilized giraffe bone looks great on the Wolf Pup and the piviot collar adds to the appeal of the knife.
