Knives incredible workmanship, but the materials just mindblowing..rich rich stag with fantastic grain..now we sadly know there is a shortage of quality stag but is there a cache anywhere of comporable quality!
love to have a humpback whittler done up with some primo stag!!

Anyone know WHY India banned export of Sambar Stag? I've never seen a real reason.

Best bet to locate some would be calling all the suppliers since any stock left would be real limited.

The last stag I recieved was from K&G. It was covered with brown paint and looked like somebody sawed it off the barn. They must be at the bottom of the barrel. Bruce B

I don't make knives, but I have this thing for stag and I do have knives made for me. I read one time back before this embargo that if a maker is going to offer stag they need to have a ten year supply. It seems that some makers still offer and have a nice supply, but many are starting to hoard it.
Rather than taking a chance of a maker not having stag for one of my projects I started picking up stag at knife shows and sending it to the maker I'm working with. The last show I was at ECCKS the pickings were slim.
When I can't find it anyomre I'll just have to order knives from makers that have it.

I've only got one set of sambar scales left. Saving them for something very special!
The reason I heard that India banned the export of the stag is because the poor folks were setting the forests on fire so they could walk around aftrewards and find the drop off antlers. Evidently they don't kill the deer at all.
I know it doesn't have the flashy name like sambar stag, but elk and caribou antler is just as nice.

Always think of your fellow knife makers as partners in the search for the perfect blade, not as people trying to compete with you and your work!

I doubt most could or can tell the difference between white tail, mule deer or sambar stag, on the knife. If the end grain is not exposed they just won't know. Not that this is something to hide. I just wonder how important this is in the long run? I suppose we should all just quit making knives when 440c and mastadon arent available at 7-11. There are many wonderful materials available. Many undiscovered. Lets keep looking. I am sure there is a another source or two?

I really need to get out more.

Texas Knifemakers has some, quality is OK. Don't expect to find any primo stag anywhere!

I guess we'll all have to switch to ivory. It is about the same price as stag nowadays and much more readily available

IVORY? where..I have a WHOLE bunch of PRIMO stag I bought back in the 80s.....wanna trade?
The real ivory stashes are kept very quite, the King of Indonesia gets ALL the ivory from any elephant that dies (yes they all die eventually) My friend made him a windsurfer and went there.....the ENTIRE basement at the Kings palace was FULL of BIG tusks.....he said there were probably thousands of them.......I have seen pictures of the basement of a few of the big English knifemakers back in the early part of this century with hundreds of tusks stacked against the walls.......Doris Duke (who recently passed away) had dozens in her basement (one of my friends cut some holes in the concrete slab in her home).....I believe her grandfather was Viceroy to India or something.....then there is the big scam that they burned all that ivory on tv... Ivory does NOT burn.....there was a whole warehouse full.....after the fire went out they probably sold it to the same guys the poachers do......there is so much ivory in Hong Kong and Japan we cant even think about it......shesssh......stinkin politicians... put a ban on the stuff and it goes from $25 a lb to $150 a lb.....that is really going to put a damper on poaching all right!!
