This is not a complaint, more like a testament. I use this knife and carry it in some harsh environments, and I finally managed (not that I'm trying) to stain it somehow.

At this point the lighting angle has to be gust right to see it, but at the correct angle, it's really obvious. I am guessing the same would have happened to S35Vn as I have been in a rather caustic environment this week (Im actually pretty happy this job is done and I won't go back for a while, hopefully).

Anyway, no real point here, just showing that this stuff is tough, but can be stained (though, it put up with a LOT before ever really showing any real stain to speak of).

Im almost positive that those stains can be fixed. I had some almost identical to those on a custom i had and the maker re dipped the blade. Im sure you know this but just wanted to throw that out in case you didnt.

Good post and point about the Damascus. I would hope that folks here understand what stainless means.
I've talked with other knife owners and they really believe stainless is impervious to staining.
In my line of work, I've seen my share of stained stainless steel sinks that homeowners think is rust and want them changed out. They're amazed when they find out that a good stainless steel cleaner will make it look new and don't have to pay for a change out.
I can't imagine what it would look like had it been carbon steel.

In pattern welding, I believe that different steels are used that have different carbon contents. Perhaps that could have something to do with the selective spotting?

I fully agree that it is called stainless and not stainfree for a reason.
