Staining Micarta?

I was just wondering, will blood permanently stain micarta? I've used my tglb for some random jobs around the place but the other day when it cane time to use it on the opening day of rabbit season I wussed out for fear of ruining the look of the black micarta scales, and along with it, the possible resale value of the knife. If so, do you think that soaking them in water first might help to keep it from absorbing blood?

Don't worry about it to much. It may darken a little, just like with regular use. All you have to do is scrub it with a stiff brush and some dawn dish liquid. Back to new.

oge is correct, blood will not stain micarta. I used both black and tan micarta handled knives on deer and pig and neither one showed staining after they were scrubbed well with a brush and dish washing liquid.

Though, a TGLB might be a bit ungainly to use on a rabbit, but now I want to try! :)

Back when I was hunting rabbit a lot at the pig farms in West Texas, an old timer stockman was my go to dresser. That little sheepsfoot blade was so handy. Easy to clean as well.

It just seems clumsy to me to use a knife as large as the animal. But I am so curious I want to go hunting!

I like a heavy blade for lopping off the head and the legs at the knees. Then I pinch the hide in the middle of the back, put it against the cutting board and use your blade of choice to make an insision big enough to get your fingers in. Use both hands, stick fingers in the insision and pull inboth directions at the same time. The hide comes off like an inside out shirt and pants. Then instead of making a small slit in the abdomen, I pinch the thin membrane of the abdomen, lay the blade flat and slice while still pinching and pulling the membrane. It removes a wide strip of membrane which makes pulling out the guts a little easier. Put the blade against the pelvis bone and give it a whack with your hand to split it. Then a quick V cut in his little bunny butt and its pretty much done.

Nice! Thanks for the step by step! :)
