After Ive sanded off all that god-awful red paint what type of stain/oil should I use? Im new to all of this and Im not looking for anything fancy. I just want a darker protective finish that really shows the wood grain.

About 20 years ago, I picked up a mora number 1 with the lamintated blade. Loved the knife, hated the red handle. I sanded it all off, and just used boiled linseed oil for weekly rubdowns. In about a year, the wood had a nice aged golden look from the linseed oil. I give it a nice rub down with a soft rag and linseed oil a couple times a year, and it maintains it very well. Never used any stain at all, just the linseed oil. Its still good to go. I also sealed up the opening around the blade where it goes into the bolster, with epoxy. Keeps any moisture from under the handle.

I've used walnut and cherry, really, any stain will look really nice. The linseed oil will look good also.

I used to seal the opening like jackknife, but I've taken it a step further and disassemble the whole knife, and seal the entire body cavity with epoxy. No more worries about rust or bacteria under the handle.

Do I need to use any kind of finish or topcoat on top of the stain? My main concern is it coming off on my hands during use.

With linseed oil, no. With others, yes, I've used polyurethane, and I like it, but there are others with far more knowledge than I who will hopefully chime in here. I used the polyurethane because I had it, not out of any special knowledge...

the beauty of the linseed oil is you can keep applying more down the road without having to strip any off.

Sorry to bump this old thread but wouldnt it be wise to have the tang hole exposed so water would drain?
