Staining or Dying Bone Handle?

Is there a good way to dye or stain a bone handle in the area that has not been jigged? The handle I would like to dye is black in the jigged section and white in the unjigged area. I would like the white area to be a burnt orange to lighter brown color. If the method you suggest also stains the bolsters or blades, then let me know how you would protect those areas.

Thanks for any suggestions,

Jim

take the bone off the handles and use a vacume jar like the vac seal u can buy for food with the dye or stain in the jar also shake it a few times.

if you cant take them off umm uhhh i guess you could tape everything you dont want stained up and use a brush or rag to wipe or paint the stain on

How deep is the jigged area ? Recently I re-did a knife and some sharpeners with antler handles , same concept.
When I got the deeper areas (jigged) the color I wanted (dark dark brown) I carefull wiped the raised areas with a towel with some denatured alcohol on it , if you are careful you wont affect the jigged area color. Then I lightly sanded the raised area with some 600 until it got to the color I wanted it (off white/cream) and finished with 1500 , a few coats of tung oil and it was good to go.

The knife is a folding stockman. The jigged area depth varies from .030 to .070" deep. If I end up removing the black color in the jigged area that is OK.

Do you think if I rough up the area with 600 grit sand paper and use stain or tung oil it will absorb into the bone?

Well the simplest way - without a lot of fuss or muss is to use leather dye - to get that color I'd use Fiebings Spirit dye in British Tan - it will be fairly yellowish/orange -if need be you can adjust the color with light brown. use alcohol to thin the color if need be.
Apply with a fine brush - if any gets on the black no biggy - just wipe it off while still damp.
If you get dye on the bolsters, etc use some acetone to clean it off.

Hope this helps.........

How about potasium permanganate?........Thats what i use....I wipe it on with cotton swabs.........carl

PP would be good to but just be sure to neutralize it - it is a fairly powerful oxidizer and will continue to work if not neitralized - plus it can/will cause rust so take care when using it.....

BTW - a mix of baking soda and water works fine as a neutralizer
