My favorite steel, far superior to cpm s30v, if you want a mirror finish it will polish well. Having about 7 percent chrome it is fairly good in stain resistance, much better than any carbon steel, four times as tough as A2 and holds a very sharp edge well. It will rust if not cared for. It is my belief that most knifes are fine cutting instruments and should be treated as such therefore I harden them to 62 RC. They take a little longer to sharpen butt you get an edge that is hard to beat. Even at 62 RC they are still tougher than most steels.

Harden at 1950 and temper at 1000 and you will get 59Rc.It is sort of like 1080 with 7% chrome to hold back corrosion and 3% vanadium to make it tough.I think it will turnout to be a good steel. When I use up most of this CPM154 that I have been working,I'm going to try a batch and compare it.

we are talking about cpm3v right when was it ever concidered stainless
if 3v is what we are dealing with it is good about not rusting but not even close to stainless
i dont have my log book right here but i think i run 2050 20min and plate quench 1000 temper 3x 2 hours
getting like 60 Rc

I think S30V was once hyped as being stainless 3V before it came out, not by Crucible but by one or two knifemakers. S30V has wear resistance between 154CM and S90V (which is pretty high), it is fairly difficult to sharpen, and has toughness between that of 154CM and D2, closer to D2. However, some production companies have had trouble heat treating or grinding it (which re-austenitizes the edge without tempering, a couple shapenings generally gets rid of the issue) and there have been reports of chipping. I don't think it is as much a problem of the steel as neglect by the production companies, and S30V's hype as a super tough stainless meant people actually used them, and the improper heat treatment and/or grinding was readily apparent. Some people have gone so far as to say that you shouldn't purchase a knife in S30V at all, as for me, I'm not so worried. My S30V knives have all done well. I hope to make knives someday, but if I test them with different heat treatments and other steels, then I'll steer clear of any problems.
