I know it was just a prototype but I notice the stainless 4 had a bead blast finish. I have heard bead blast finishes tend to rust easier then a polished finish. So why not make the stainless 4 have a polished finish?

440c is a pretty rust resistant steel. It shouldn't really have problems rusting, just wipe it clean after using it.

This...
In all reality no steel is rust proof, but if it is a quality made blade, (being a Rowen product, I'm sure there is no question), then there will be no worries about rust under normal circumstances.

I taken care of even remotely as well as a 1095 blade, it aint gonna rust.:)

A lot of guys over on the W&SS sub forum are using O1, 1095, 3v, & other carbon blades quite a bit outdoors. They don't seem to worry over their blades regardless of the finish. Just wipe them down. I can't imagine 440c being a problem. I used a Buck light (buck 110 with plastic scales) for years and never had a problem. It's wasn't 440c, but I never worried over rust with it.

My carving blades are from O1 carbon steel, and have developed a little rust on some trips. Nothing a scotch bright, or some 1200 grit wet/dry didn't take right off.

I don't tend to worry too much about rust on my carbon steel knives or my stainless. I m just saying if you are going to come out with the same model knife but the only difference is its stainless steel why not make it as rust resistant as possible without making the price to high? IMO. But I would leave the coating off so you can show off your shinny blade.

A myth in the knife world is that out there somewhere there is a super-steel with high performance cutting ability that doesn't rust. A steel foundry in Japan made the myth a reality by intoducing H-1 steel. H1 steel is a PH steel meaning it is a precipitation-hardened steel. It's naturally hard without heat-treating and with 1% nitrogen instead of carbon it cannot rust. H1 holds a sharpened cutting edge equivalent to many premium carbon steels but without developing rust or pitting.

Oh thanks.
Now I need some of that too.
Just when I thought I had all the bases covered you gotta go and bring this up.

Let the search begin.......

spyderco's salt line is made with h1 and culterylover on youtube has a test with their ladybug in h1 that goes on for weeks no sign of rust at ALL!

I suspect the biggest reason is because it's a lot cheaper to produce a satin finish than a high polish, which translates to lower cost for the end user.

Also the lower reflectivity makes it easier to stalk squirrels in the bush. :D

yes. niolox from germany. developed as knife steel. great edge holding, cutting abilities and rust resistant.
h1 is rust resistant but in my experience cutting abilities and edge holding is not comparable to 440c or 1095.

I like the finish on the stainless 4 and never had a rusting 440c blade. So I'm not worried.
