In the 1970s Camillus made the TL-29 with stainless steel blades. Was this a soft (like Swiss Army) or hard (like Buck) alloy?

Most likely 440A.
Agree. In the 1970's both Schrade and Camillus used 440A as their standard stainless.

IMO Camillus ran their stainless a bit softer than Buck runs their 420HC, though I've never seen a spec and I've never tested them side by side. So, best guess. But Camillus 440A still gives good results. Back in the day I carried a Camillus-made Buck 303 daily for years and never had any complaints about its ability to cut. And that was 440A also.

I'd also bet on 440A. That had been their standard stainless for a long time. I have one of their stainless TL-29s and a Camillus-made Buck 307, and I don't have any complaints about the steel itself in either of them. The TL-29's blade is a bit thicker behind the edge than I'd ideally prefer. But the steel still sharpens up pretty nicely, nevertheless.
