I currently have two knives and both are cv. I was wondering how they compared, and if you guys only go for cv or if it doesnt bother you.

I have a Case stainless "mini trapper". In fact, that is my only modern Case, and 1 of 2 Cases I own. The quality is fine, and I would have no problem buying another.

i skinned and butchered an elk last fall with a case ridgeback hunter 4" blade. i only had to touch-up the edge a couple of times. i did use a gerber backpackers axe to split the pelvis, etc.. it's the knife i carry into the back country of montana.

I have a Case Sodbuster Jr in stainless. No problems with it. Sharp as the dickens. Holds an edge.

Have an old beat-up large sodbuster as well. I've just about got the edge where it ought to be, and it works just fine. Cuts well, holds its edge. Spent an evening hacking up boxes with it. Had to touch it up mid job, and again when I was done. Hardly surprising, as cardboard is tough stuff.

I also have a new Peanut (bone stag) in stainless. Even sharper. No touch-up required so far. Think I may get another.

I have the two-bladed folding hunter in stainless. Very sharp out of the box. Hasn't seen much use yet, so I can't speak to durability, but if it follows the others it'll be fine.

Frankly, I like the blade quality of my CV blades more, but I'm not unhappy with any of the stainless blades.

I've always steered clear of stainless cause it seems to rust faster in my climate, but I have aquirred quite a few case stainless and it is goos stuff. Its gotten me over my carbon only preferences.

The SS is little harder to get to my standard of sharp than the CV, but neither one really seems to get dull faster... I prefer CV for the patina look, and the edge touches up faster, but both work fine.

A question for the experts;
Is there a difference between the older carbon case used, like in the early 80s, and the CV they use now? I've not used the older one very much, but it rusts/patinas easier than the newer blades.

I recently went back to using my stainless bone stag peanut after using a CV yellow peanut for a while, and in normal day to day use I can't tell a difference. The stainless has opened my mail, UPS boxes, cut twine for the backyard tomato plants, whittles some sticks, cut up BBQ ribs, all with ease. :thumbup:

I have heard the stuff about Case stainless and avoided them for years. I wish I hadn't. I like this steel, takes and holds an edge as good as a SAK or an Opinel (legendary knives, both). I'm on a mission to accumulate as many Case knives as possible from now on.

I like it okay, but I like sharpening the CV better. Get a good edge on both, though, and both are very useable.

I picked up a Case 6344SS just a couple of days ago. It's a real "plain vanilla" type of pocketknife...a medium stockman with stainless blades. They have taken a really good edge, and seem to be holding it well. I like the Case stainless knives!
