After seeing blackend's raindrop stainless damascus blade I decided to order one. I'm wondering how the blade will hold up to scratches since, if I understand it correctly, the dark parts of the blade is basically an etch? Is this similar to a forced patina? If so, how will this look after some use due to the etch being scratched off?

Hi John,

Hope you don't mind me helping with an answer, not because you mentioned my knife, but I've been using Damascus Sebs for quite some time now. The etching on Damascus is feric choloride and my understanding this that it brings out the dark and light contrasts between the different kinds of steel used in it. It should not scratch easily but you will find it may fade over time. The good thing being that it can be re-etched if need be.

Chris is now offering a clear coating for Damascus which will protect the etching for one and also provide a better corrosion barrier if using their B&W(black and white) Damascus.

I have two Sebs with the coating. The ladder pattern that's coated seems to be quite a bit lighter than my spiralgraph. Maybe the etching on the spiralgragh is different. The spiralgraph/ivory Seb I have was actually the first SS Damascus clear coated from the factory, or so I was told by Mike Young, the last shop foreman.

So if you buy one from an online dealer is their a way to tell whether the blade has been coated or not? You would think all of the new B & W ones would come coated to prevent rusting but I'm not sure.

Builtz06 you're right. All B&W Damascus comes coated from now on. You will have to request it on SS Damascus.

Thanks for the reply Rob. Good to know that it does not scratch easily. I don't like coatings though, so I'm going to forego the clear kalgard for now and will see how she holds up.
