Hi Guys,

I just got a Camillus BK&T BK77, the stainless version of the BK7: http://www.camillusknives.com/bkt/index.shtml

I really like this knife. It is plain, solid, durable, and has smoothed edges. A real worker.

I am looking for something with more or less the same geometry and materials, just smaller. Specifically:

- fixed blade, full tang
- some kind of high-quality stainless blade
- no-maintenance handle, smoothish micarta preferred
- blade geometry like BK7/BK77: on the thin side for its width
- smooth feel in the hand
- blade length in the 5" to 6" range

The intended use is general outdoors/fieldwork. It does not need to chop.

My budget is up to $350, and I am willing to wait for a custom maker.

Any ideas?

Scott

Take a look at this one. The pic is from DLT Trading Post. It is the Bark River Sandstorm 5" stainless, smooth micarta.Patrick

Check out Doug Ritter's new fixed blade RSK Mk3

http://www.equipped.org/rsk_mk3.htm

- fixed blade, full tang slightly extended at the back for mild hammering
- S30V stainless steel blade
- G10 composite handle that is very mildly grooved for grip
- drop point, thick cord blade; 0.14" thick with a high grind to make it great slicer
- the handle's grooves are very mild and the scales are rounded on all sides for comfort
- blade length is 4.5' - slightly smaller than your specification, but that also makes it much easier to pack and/or carry. Due partially to the wide cord (almost 1.5") the blade feels very substantial.

One heck of a semi-custom knife with the heritage of the folding Rittergrips for only $165!!

Check out Bob Dozier, Chris Reeve, and Bark River Knife and Tool. None of them totally stainless but all should suit your needs very well and hold great edges.

Here's another vote for the RSK3 FB. A terrific knife with all the bells and whistles for less than most customs. :D

Fallkniven S1, Al Mar Sere, Camillus CQB. Of course, for $350 you can chose between several terrific customs.

Bob uses D2 as standard. It isn't "stainless" but it is close.

You can also order any Dozier in S30V if you want true stainless.

Black linen micarta is standard, but you can get a variety of colors of paper micarta, canvas micarta, and a wide selection of wood and other natural materials.

Hollow grinds are standard, but you can get a flat grind like on your Becker, or a convex grind.

Thanks guys.

A lot to think about! I am leaning toward finding a custon maker, but I see a lot of knives that would be nice to own.

Is it possible to have a custom maker build a knife to specs?

Take a look at the Bark River Settler and the Bark River Sperati point (both around $120, depending on handle material). They are both excellent and very pleasing to the eye. I have my second Settler on it's way.
