Stainless for guards and bolsters?

What kind of stainless do you use for guards and bolsters? I would like something reasonably easy to shape and polish by hand.

Yes , 416 is a free machining grade , can actually be hardened to a small degree. Easier to work than a 304 or 303.

303 is sulferated as well and machines nearly as freely as 416. 304 and 316 are bears.

Agree with 416. Don't forget to get matching 416 pin stock.

I use the 416, but for a long time I used the 304, I must say that it is more difficult to work but shines much better than the 416.

John, AISI304 I can bring it to a mirror with a brilliance that the 416 does not reach.
