OK, I neecd to pick up some stainless barstock and pins, for guards(and the pin/rod will be for pinning handles and the guards, possibly).

Anyawys, which should I be getting, 416, 303 or something else?
Sorta hoping you'll say 303 since it looks to be cheaper most places. :)

You should be getting 416.Sorry, but is does machine easier and is preferable.I have used both and now use only 416.Dave:)

I'll ditto the previous comments...Sheffield Knifemakers supply is where I get mine. I think their price is pretty good .

303 is the devil! Avoid it at all costs!

Seriously, it is a bear to machine/file. 416 is way easier. TruGrit has it for good prices.

Some makers may be able to solder 300 series SS, but I have never been able to. Many makers with more experience than me, say the same thing.
Try to get the rod and barstock from the same place. Better chance of a good color match with the pins, in your bolsters.
The first batch of 416 I used was heat treated, but I never had it done again. I didn't notice any difference in scratch resistance.

416 rules although I think Sterling Silver is the king. Too bad sterling scratches in the hands of a teenager and/or hunter. 303 is the $hits to work. Spend more money you will be happier.

Least I found a question I could get a consensus on. :)

416 it'll be, though I think I decided on brass for this time because I have it here and wanna get back to work on this knife as soon as I get my slow down wheel. :)
