Stainless handles?

I have a couple of questions concerning steal handles. Does anyone know where I could have the scales checkered or something simmaler that would give them a better grip? I don't want to pay more for this add on than the knife cost to begin with.

Second, does anyone know where to get one of the old steel handled rescues, I beleve they were called the mariner(not sure though). If not, are there any plans for stainless rescues on the future?

Third, why doesn't Spyderco add some sort of texture to the steal handles? and why aren't all models available in steal?

Ive heard of people using skateboard tape to help with grip. hope this helps...

Hi Will. There are seveal companies that do aftermarket checkering on steel handles. I don't know their names off hand. Most are fairly expensive as this is a hand operation.

The old "Mariner/Rescue" models are hard to find these days.
Our most recent version in SS had a L/R clip. That version is curently being looked at by one of our distributors to carry as an exclusive model, so a return is posible.

Adding texturing to steel handles is 1) costly and 2) eliminates engraving capabilities. We are looking into ways of providing "grip" to the SS handle models.

We dont make SS versions of all of the models partially because Spyderco is a relatively small company and cannot maintain that many SKUs and partially because not all of the models are desired in SS in sufficient quantities to warrant production.

hope that helps.

I have one steel-handled knife, a Dragonfly. I roughed up the handle on my Dragonfly by taking a thin file and lightly scratching or scoring the handle with the thin, side edge of the file. The scratches run from from the top (or spine) of the handle to the bottom of the handle. The scratches are not carefully measured out to produce a regular pattern. I just repeatedly drew the file over the relatively soft stainless scales, with light pressure, until the handle was all scratched up to my liking. This scratch pattern works well for me, and I would duplicate this on other stainless handles when I get them. The look may not be to everyones liking, but it's fine with me. And, it cost nothing to do.
Besides using a file, you could use a hacksaw blade to get a similar effect, and probably other tools as well.
Of course, if you must have a tidy checkered pattern for your knife then my do-it-yourself cheapo method is not for you. But it works for me, and it might for you.

Thanks guys, I think I'll try the grip tape first and see how it works. I don't trust myself to use a file.

I'm looking forward to that rescue if/when it comes out.

Will22,
Drop "sc_rebel1957" an email. He does the type of work you were asking about.

Be careful that you don't use too abrasive of grip (skateboard) tape or it'll wear a hole in your pocket, and impede your "draw". I use "Agrip", and that seems to work very well on my stainless Spyderco Police and Delica models, and seems to hold-up to use pretty well.

Will the tape will work ok but when it starts wearing off it looks worse than my great aunt Hilda in a thong :D .
What I can do instead is stipple the handle which adds greatly to the usefulness of the knife.
I've found another way im working on now that looks fantastic and adds some grip to it.
I take a carbide cutter 1/32 in diamater and cut a shallow pattern in rows on both sides, as many as you want in just about any pattern you want.
Email me @ sc_rebel1857@yahoo.com for prices, i've not had any complaints so far about my work and i'm fairly reasonable and can give you a 7 day turn around from date recieved. Thanks Blades for the promo :) Ron
