Stainless HT wrap???

Have some ATS-34 and a nice kiln on order. Am going to have to help keep the steel from oxygen during the HT.

Anyone heat treating the super steels that have used the stainless wrap? My question: about how much wrap will I need to use for blades approximately 8 inches total length (including tang). At this point I will only be heat treating one blade at a time.

Enco has 24" X 50' on sale for $90. Vitraguard has been discontinued by Sheffield so I guess I'll need to get some wrap.

Thanks

I heat treat all of my 154-CM in stainless wrap. To do an 8"o.a.l. knife you will need a piece of foil about 10" or 11" long so you can triple fold it at each end. The width will depend on how wide your blade is. That is a great price for 50'. If ya' don't mind me being nosey, what kind of kiln did ya' get?

RL, be sure to put a piece of combustable in the wrap with the blade. I use small pieces of clean plain card board. The size depends on the size of the blade. I usually use a 1" square piece. It burns up most of the oxygen that is in the pack so you don't get as much crud on the blade.

Sean,

Thanks. Do I wrap it around the blade more than once???

I have on order the 18 inch EvenHeat Rampmaster II model. I bought it new from Tim Zowada who is having it drop shipped to me from EvenHeat, and he saved me 115 bucks compared to the lowest price I could find from the distributers EvenHeat has on there web site. Not only that but Tim gave me about 1000 bucks worth of HT advise while he was at it.

Special THANKS TO DECK HOFFMANN who advised me to check with Tim before buying the kiln.

Michael,

Great tip! Makes sense and that is probably why I didn't think of it, though, I did consider putting some combustable in the kiln. Guess that could also be done.

I take the piece of foil and crease it in half, put the blade in spine first, triple fold the top, and then triple fold both ends. Good call on the Evenheat oven. I have been using a 22.5" Rampmaster model for several years now, with nothing but fantastic results(knock on wood).

You have answered my curiousity about the wrap. I can now estimate wrap cost per blade and you have told me how I should use the wrap. Thanks.

I am glad to here you like the EvenHeat. I would have gotten the 22.5 if I had room for it. I will someday wish I had because I would like to machine rifle barrels. I should still be able to do barrels for such things as the 10/22 with the 18 incher and by using the diagonal depth I may get 20 inches out of her.

It also helps if you crease each fold tight using a wallpaper seam roller or something similar. An old beer bottle might even work. You want the wrap to be tight as is reasonably possible around your blade. FWIW, I have omitted the cardboard combustible in my last few heat treats and haven't seen any difference. Be careful with the wrap, I wear gloves as it is it is super sharp just like a razor blade!

You also might get an argon purge add on from paragon and forget the foil. tha initial cost will be higher but with the price of foil you should quickly make up the cost.

I use the EvenHeat Rampmaster also
I like it,, it's a long one,, I had evenheat make it longer
than they're longest model.
I Use 154CM most of the time for my s/s and foil wrap it.
I've been messing with co2 to atmospherize it because I have it here,
but it looks like the argon is going to win me over.

Believe it, or not, I use an old antacid bottle to seal my seams. It works for me. I've never put cardboard in with my blades, and they come out of the wrap looking just dandy.

Great info from all you guys. Really anxious to get the oven. Should be here next week, I hope.
