Stainless pipe bonanza

I went to see a 87 year old German machinist who advertised a 6 foot piece of 4.5" stainless pipe for $10/ft.After talking about the old country and old days,he told me he had four sections of 3.5" and four of 4.5".He wanted me to buy them all.After a bit of joke telling and beer drinking I bid him Gut ein Tag and left with all eight pieces for $75.That's barely over $1.50 per foot!

Would that stuff work better in a heat treat forge than black pipe? If so, are you selling cut-offs?
