Hello Group
i am in need of some help. I want to make stainless damascus and my first several tries were a failure my metal would not hold a good edge. Can someone help with what mixture of steel would be best to use to achieve a good stainless Damascus and a nice hard metal that will sharpen well.

1084 & 15N20 is a pretty standard mix. Works easily and heat treats simply.

Wooops! Just saw you wanted stainless... I have no clue there, sorry!!

Which steels you use in your previous attempt ? Do you have some pictures ? Search on Damasteel site , I think that they have written which steel they use for theirs stainless damasteel

What equipment and experience do you have for damascus?
Also, what method and metals did you use?

RWL34, ATS34, 154CM, CPM-154, 440, 420 all will work. Damasteel is RWL34 (same alloy as ATS-34/154CM/CPM154).

Assuming a good weld in the billet and proper materials, edge retention issues are usually improper HT.
