I have read the information from Mr. Stamp and others, but I'm still not quite clear on this. Are the latest stainless steels like CPM440V or BG42 or others as good in edge holding and toughness (resistance to breakage) as the best carbon steels?

Thanks,

D. Epstein

Not from what I have seen. You might want to talk to R. J. Martin, he has worked with CPM-440V, CPM-420V, BG-42 and A2.

In a general way carbon steel is much tougher than stainless, while the new stainless have
more wear resistance.
Depending on use this this "may but need not" make a difference in edge holding.
